Bronchoscopic Examinations for Lung Cancer Treatment

Bronchoscopic examinations are a mainstay procedure for the collection of lung cancer tissue to confirm a diagnosis. The Internal Medicine 1 Respiratory Medicine Group uses ultrasound bronchoscopy and chest CT images to create a 3D “virtual bronchoscopy” model, which is then used for bronchoscopic examinations. This has made it possible to collect tissue from even small lesions, for an improved diagnosis rate.
We can also use these bronchoscopic examination technologies to collect lung cancer tissue samples through a technique called cryobiopsy, in which the tip of the device is chilled to a temperature of ‑45°C: freezing the lung cancer tissue in this way makes the collection of vastly larger tissue fragments feasible, compared to conventional methods. The search for cancer gene mutations plays a crucial role in the selection of therapeutic drugs to treat lung cancer. The large tissue fragments collected through cryobiopsy promise to be sufficient for searching for genetic mutations.
